We would like to offer to your attention a translation of the article Twelve Rules for Collecting Works of Contemporary Art by Beatrice Comte published in Le Figaro Magazine in April 2000. In our opinion the author has succeeded to formulate in a laconic way the choice criteria for collecting works of art.
If you are an experienced collector you might prefer to ignore or to test these rules.
If you are a first time buyer or have just started your collection of contemporary art, this article can offer you a practical advise and can serve you as a compass in the turbulent and sometimes incomprehensive ocean of contemporary art.

1. Place a bet on unknown artists. Some young artists are very promising, when older ones that have been through the peak of their success, are worth collecting as well. Their appreciation can come back again: you should try to guess if their falling out favour was only temporary.

2. Survey street displays, visit regularly open studios, and examine closely the exhibitions of art school graduates.

3. Follow the sales of small specialised auctions to keep yourself informed about the auction prices. Think international, not hexagonal.

4. A quick look at the foreign revues would keep you from buying the artists overprotected by the local institutions.

5. Be suspicious of the current fashion. Something that is fashionable wouldn't necessarily become a good investment, and no doubt it is too late to buy it for a reasonable price.

6. Participate in art purchasing syndicates. The works acquired in this way belonging to a group of people would double the pleasure and significantly reduce your investment.

7. Before starting to collect, study at least a little, history of art. If not, you would be better off collecting sweet boxes! In order to maintain its value a work of art should really be inscribed in the particular cultural context.

8. The originality of the work should be obvious, you should feel that the artist would progress with time. Meet the artist if possible.

9. To decide collecting the artists from developing countries is judicious, if nevertheless their work takes roots in the cultural tradition of their country, thus inserting it into the contemporary movement.

10. Always check the technical quality of the work. Hazards of conservation represent a major concern nowadays.

11. Pay attention to the new modes of artistic expressions such as photography or video. Leave aside your habits.

12. The most essential criteria, which should guide your choice, is pleasure.
